The Perils of Driving a Backhoe

Posted by pattya on November 20, 2008

I am very much into the idea of saving water, especially because I live in a desert community.  After receiving a water bill that brought tears to my eyes, I decided it was time to convert to desert landscaping.

To accomplish this, I needed to basically rip out the old grass and blade everything down to lay down tarp and prepare for the rocks that will be poured.  It sounded so easy as the guy at the home improvement place described it to me, so when they delivered the backhoe to my front door that Saturday morning, I thought I was good to good.  But no, not so easy.

By the time I was done, I’d driven the backhoe off the sidewalk twice, almost flipping it onto its side.  And while I was able to eliminate all of the grass in my front yard, I also eliminated the nice tree that provided the only shade out front.  It did prove to be entertaining for my neighbors however; by the end of the day, there were more than a few sitting on their front porch watching me destroy my front yard. But who cares because by the end of the day, my grass was gone (and the tree, yes) the tarp was down, and a big pile of rock had been poured on my driveway ready to be spread out in the morning.  Mission accomplished!
