Technology Is Good

Posted by Primer on January 29, 2009

I have a really cool job. I work at a bicycle shop. And you can bet your bottom dollar that I have a really nice mountain bike! It’s the biggest bike shop in town, and as you probably can guess my friends are all jealous because they all have crummy jobs. Anyway, our owner just really kicked things up a notch in the whole technology department.

For years, whenever anyone wanted to buy something, we had to manually punch the part number into the computer. That’s all fine and dandy, except that some of the part numbers are really long and even will often times contain letters. It is very time consuming. Plus, if you miss just one number or letter, everything gets all screwed up!

So the owner went out and bought a barcode printer and some cordless barcode scanners. Welcome to the 21st century! It all hooked right into the existing inventory control software too. That meant that none of us had to learn a whole new system which had been a concern of mine when I first heard he was doing this. So without reinventing the wheel or really changing things up that much, he went and made my job a lot easier.

Quick Summer Cash

Posted by Primer on January 20, 2009

It’s kinda hard trying to make ends meet as a college student putting myself through school.  I can only really find the time to work a part time job during the semester so during the summer break I work as much as I can to save for when school starts again.  It became a bit of a drag not being able to go away on trips with friends while school was out because I was always holding down at least two jobs, but last summer I had absolutely no complaints.

When browsing on craigslist I found a job opening for a gas grill island cook at a nearby resort.  I didn’t really know what the job entailed but I had heard through the grapevine that you get tipped pretty well.  So I applied and, with my full time availability, got the job almost immediately.  It felt great being out there, serving all the customers with burgers, kebabs, hot potatoes, whatever I could think to throw on the grill really!  The place is pretty fancy so the out door kitchens were really thought out and made it super easy to navigate.

A giant outdoor sink was located right next to my grill so cleanup took no time at all.  It’s amazing how many people opt for outdoor living in the heat of Arizona’s summer but I’m sure glad they did because the tips made my life a lot easier!   I ended up making enough money that summer to last me through the whole next school semester and I even had some savings left over so I could go on a Spring Break trip with my friends.  My advice to any struggling college student, if you’re friendly and like people, working at a resort such as this could be the best summer job you’ll ever have.
